The incident that took place yesterday at the Chorbagan Durga Puja Sarbojanin Samiti in Kolkata is very unfortunate. I had also gone there to offer prayers; it was extremely crowded. There was a light drizzle while we were heading toward the pandal, and by the time we left, the rain had intensified. We moved away from the pandal to clear a path for the crowd behind us, but many people stayed put. The crowd behind us needed a way out, and the people further back also needed to exit. This has led to a stampede; the primary failure lies with the police administration. People should never have been allowed to congregate in such large numbers at the exit gate, and there were neither police nor volunteers present. This is the worst tragedy to have ever occurred during a *puja* in Bengal. My deepest condolences go out to the families of the deceased and the injured. 👏👏
