Ankita Bhandari Murder Case: The Complete Story From Her Death to the VIP Angle and CBI Probe

Who Was Ankita Bhandari?

Ankita Bhandari was a 19-year-old woman from Pauri Garhwal in Uttarakhand who was working as a receptionist at the Vanantara Resort near Rishikesh. She came from a modest family and had taken up the job while trying to build a future for herself.

Her story became a national issue in September 2022 after she disappeared from the resort where she worked. What initially appeared to be a missing-person case soon turned into one of Uttarakhand's most closely watched murder investigations.

The case eventually led to the conviction of resort owner Pulkit Arya and his two employees, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta. All three were sentenced to life imprisonment in May 2025.

What Happened on September 18, 2022?

According to the prosecution case, Ankita was killed on the night of September 18, 2022.

The prosecution alleged that Ankita had resisted pressure to provide “special services” to a guest described as a VIP at the resort. Investigators relied on WhatsApp conversations, witness statements and other circumstantial evidence to establish what happened in the days leading up to her death.

One of the pieces of evidence discussed during the trial was a WhatsApp conversation in which Ankita expressed her refusal to compromise her dignity for money. The prosecution also presented evidence suggesting that she was unhappy with the treatment she was receiving at the resort and wanted to leave.

On the evening she disappeared, witnesses reportedly heard Ankita crying during a phone conversation and asking to be taken away. She was later seen leaving the resort with Pulkit Arya, while Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta followed them on another motorcycle.

CCTV footage from the Pashulok area was also presented during the investigation. The prosecution's case was that this was the last known movement of Ankita before her death.

How Did Ankita Disappear?

Ankita was reported missing after she left the resort on September 18.

The disappearance immediately raised questions because she had not simply left her workplace voluntarily. Her family and others began looking for her, while public pressure around the case gradually increased.

The resort owner, Pulkit Arya, and employees Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta subsequently came under suspicion.

Within days, the investigation moved from a missing-person case towards an alleged murder.

The Three Main Accused

Pulkit Arya was the owner of the Vanantara Resort and the son of former Uttarakhand BJP leader and minister Vinod Arya. Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta worked at the resort.

Police arrested all three after the investigation pointed towards their alleged involvement. Uttarakhand Police later said the arrests were made within 24 hours of the incident becoming known to investigators.

The arrests became a major turning point because the investigation now focused on what had happened to Ankita after she left the resort.

When Was Ankita's Body Found?

Ankita's body was recovered from the Chilla canal on September 24, 2022, six days after she disappeared.

The recovery confirmed the worst fears of her family and transformed the case into a murder investigation. The discovery also triggered widespread public anger across Uttarakhand.

The case quickly became larger than a single criminal investigation. People took to the streets demanding justice, while questions were raised about the circumstances surrounding Ankita's employment, the conduct of the resort management and the handling of the investigation.

Why Did the Case Trigger Such Huge Protests?

The case touched several sensitive issues at the same time: the murder of a young woman, allegations of pressure to provide sexual services to guests, the involvement of a politically connected family and questions about whether powerful people could have been connected to the events.

Protests spread across Uttarakhand, with people demanding a transparent investigation and strict punishment for those responsible.

The fact that Pulkit Arya was the son of a former BJP minister added another layer of public and political attention to the case. The BJP expelled Vinod Arya and his elder son from the party after the case came to light.

The Resort Was Demolished — Why Did That Become Controversial?

Another major controversy emerged when parts of the Vanantara Resort were demolished soon after the murder came to light.

The demolition became a subject of public debate because the resort was also a crime scene. Critics questioned whether the destruction could have affected the preservation of physical evidence.

The controversy over the demolition continued to influence public perception of the investigation, even after the police filed their chargesheet.

The issue later featured in arguments surrounding the case, with the victim's side pointing to concerns about the destruction or alteration of evidence, including the resort structure and electronic material.

The SIT Investigation

The Uttarakhand government formed a Special Investigation Team to investigate the murder. The SIT was headed by DIG P. Renuka Devi.

Investigators collected witness statements, electronic evidence, WhatsApp conversations, CCTV-related material and forensic evidence. The prosecution ultimately relied heavily on circumstantial evidence because there was no direct eyewitness to the actual moment when Ankita was pushed into the canal.

The investigation resulted in a chargesheet of around 500 pages.

Uttarakhand Police later said that the investigation was completed in 88 days and that three accused were arrested within 24 hours of the case coming to light.

What Evidence Was Presented in Court?

The prosecution presented a large body of circumstantial evidence.

Among the important evidence were statements from witnesses, WhatsApp conversations, CCTV footage and forensic findings. The prosecution also relied on the “last seen” theory, arguing that Ankita was last seen with the accused before her death.

A total of 47 prosecution witnesses were examined during the trial. The defence challenged the prosecution's version and argued that Ankita had died by suicide and that the accused were not responsible for her death.

The court ultimately accepted the prosecution's chain of circumstances as sufficient to establish the guilt of the three accused.

What Were the Charges?

The accused faced charges connected to murder, destruction of evidence and other offences.

Pulkit Arya was convicted under provisions including Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for murder, Section 201 for causing disappearance of evidence and Section 354A relating to sexual harassment, along with provisions of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.

The other accused were also convicted for their roles in the crime and destruction of evidence. The precise sections applied to each accused varied according to the findings of the trial court.

The 2025 Court Verdict

After a trial lasting more than two years, the Kotdwar court delivered its verdict on May 30, 2025.

Pulkit Arya, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta were found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The court also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on each convict and directed them to collectively pay ₹4 lakh as compensation to Ankita's family.

The prosecution had sought severe punishment, while Ankita's parents had publicly expressed their desire for the harshest possible sentence.

The verdict brought a degree of legal closure to the murder prosecution, but it did not end every question surrounding the case.

Why Is the Case Still Being Discussed?

The reason is the alleged VIP angle.

During the original investigation, allegations emerged that Ankita had been pressured to provide “special services” to a VIP guest. The identity of that alleged VIP became one of the most controversial unanswered questions surrounding the case.

It is important to separate what was established in court from what remains an allegation.

The trial court convicted Pulkit Arya and the two other accused for Ankita's murder. The alleged involvement of a separate VIP was not established as a fact in that trial.

That distinction is particularly important because several names have subsequently been mentioned publicly in connection with the alleged VIP angle, but allegations circulating in public or on social media should not be treated as judicial findings.

How Did the VIP Controversy Return?

The issue returned strongly to public attention after videos and an alleged audio recording circulated in late 2025.

Actor Urmila Sanawar made allegations about a person she described as being connected to the alleged VIP angle. Former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore was also drawn into the controversy after an alleged conversation circulated online.

Rathore denied the allegations and claimed that the audio was fabricated using AI. Legal proceedings followed over social-media posts and allegations linking people to the case. The Uttarakhand High Court later dealt with several FIRs arising from the controversy, while noting the seriousness of allegations made against individuals in relation to a concluded murder case.

Dushyant Kumar Gautam, whose name has also been publicly associated with the alleged VIP controversy, has denied the allegations. Court records reviewed in 2026 noted that he had not been named as an accused in Ankita's original murder case and that no court had found him responsible for her death.

Why Did the CBI Enter the Picture?

After years of demands from Ankita's family and renewed controversy over the alleged VIP angle, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recommended a CBI investigation in January 2026.

The CBI subsequently took over the investigation into the alleged role of an unidentified VIP. In February 2026, the agency registered a case and began its investigation.

This is separate from the original prosecution that resulted in life sentences for Pulkit Arya, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta.

In other words, the CBI probe is not reopening the basic fact that the three men were convicted by the trial court. Its focus is on the additional allegations surrounding the possible involvement of another person.

What Has the CBI Done So Far?

The CBI has been examining people and material connected with the alleged VIP angle.

In October 2026, CBI officials met Ankita's parents and assured them that the investigation would examine the relevant aspects of the case. Her parents also asked the agency to conduct narco-analysis tests on former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore and actor Urmila Sanawar. Such a request from the family does not itself mean that either person has been established as guilty of any offence.

On October 19, 2026, reports said a CBI team went to question Urmila Sanawar at her residence but did not find her there and returned without questioning her.

The investigation is therefore still developing.

Why Are Ankita's Parents Protesting Again in 2026?

Even after the three convictions, Ankita's parents have continued to demand answers about the alleged VIP angle.

Their concerns intensified after Dushyant Kumar Gautam was appointed Governor of Sikkim in October 2026. The family has alleged a connection between Gautam and the disputed VIP claims and has demanded that his appointment be put on hold until the CBI investigation is completed.

Gautam has denied the allegations.

On October 14, 2026, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi joined Ankita's parents at their sit-in near India Gate in New Delhi. The following day, Delhi Police detained the parents after an overnight protest.

The political dimension of the controversy should therefore be understood separately from the judicial finding in the original murder case.

What Is the Current Legal Position of the Three Convicts?

The life sentences imposed on Pulkit Arya, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta have been challenged before the Uttarakhand High Court.

In August 2026, the High Court rejected the bail pleas of all three convicts. Their appeals against the conviction and life sentences remain pending.

This means the trial court's conviction remains an important part of the current legal record, while the higher-court appeals have not yet reached their final conclusion.

Ankita Bhandari Case: The Complete Timeline

Ankita disappeared from the Vanantara Resort on September 18, 2022. The investigation soon focused on resort owner Pulkit Arya and employees Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta. Her body was recovered from the Chilla canal on September 24.

The state government formed an SIT to investigate the case. The police investigation resulted in a chargesheet of around 500 pages, with the prosecution eventually presenting 47 witnesses during the trial.

The trial began in January 2023, while prosecution evidence began later that year. After lengthy proceedings, the Kotdwar court convicted the three accused on May 30, 2025 and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

The convicts appealed against the judgment. The Uttarakhand High Court later rejected their bail pleas while keeping their appeals pending.

In late 2025 and early 2026, renewed allegations surrounding the alleged VIP angle brought the case back into public debate. Uttarakhand recommended a CBI investigation in January 2026, and the CBI took up the probe into the alleged role of an unidentified VIP.

By October 2026, Ankita's parents were again protesting publicly, while the CBI was continuing its investigation and meeting people connected with the allegations.

What Has Been Proven and What Remains an Allegation?

This is the most important distinction when understanding the Ankita Bhandari case.

The murder prosecution against Pulkit Arya, Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta resulted in convictions and life sentences from the trial court. The prosecution presented circumstantial and electronic evidence, and the court found the chain of evidence sufficient to convict them. Their appeals remain pending before the High Court.

The separate allegation that another VIP was involved is still under investigation by the CBI. No person should be described as responsible for Ankita's murder on the basis of allegations, social-media posts or unverified recordings alone.

Similarly, the allegations made against people whose names have surfaced in the VIP controversy have been denied by them, and the CBI investigation has yet to establish a final conclusion on that aspect.

Why the Ankita Bhandari Case Still Matters

The Ankita Bhandari case has remained in public memory because it combines the death of a young woman, questions about workplace safety, allegations of exploitation, political connections and the long-running demand for accountability.

For Ankita's family, the life sentences handed to the three convicted men did not answer every question they believe remains unresolved.

For the legal system, the original murder case has already produced a trial-court conviction and life sentences, while the appeals continue.

And for the CBI, the separate investigation into the alleged VIP angle represents a new chapter in a case that has already passed through a major trial.

The final picture will become clearer only when the pending appeals and the CBI investigation reach their respective conclusions.

For now, the most accurate way to describe the case is this: three men have been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for Ankita Bhandari's murder, their appeals remain pending, and a separate CBI investigation is examining allegations surrounding an unidentified VIP. The identity and role of any additional person, if established by evidence, will ultimately have to be determined through the legal process.
